Ask six industries whether they use AI and you get six wildly different answers — 12% of trades contractors have it embedded in operations while 87% of small businesses use it somewhere in their marketing. Both numbers are real. This report reconciles the 2026 adoption data for six small-business industries, names the sources, and ranks the top five AI automations for each — with estimated annual savings from our AI Opportunity Atlas.
Last updated: August 2026Every AI adoption statistic answers a different question. The Census Business Trends and Outlook Survey asks whether a business used AI to produce goods or services in the last two weeks — the strictest definition in use — and lands at 17-20% for 2026. Industry surveys ask whether anyone at the business uses AI tools for anything, and land at 68-87%. Neither is wrong. The honest reading, which we maintain across our adoption tracker and methodology, is that most small businesses now touch AI somewhere, while a much smaller core — roughly one in five — has rebuilt an actual business process around it. The per-industry numbers below tell you where your peers really are on that spectrum.
Commercial contractors are the fastest movers of 2026: the share reporting measurable business impact from AI more than doubled in a year, from 17% to 38% (ServiceTitan Commercial Specialty Contractor Report, 1,000+ construction leaders, March 2026). The beachheads are exactly where the money is: cost estimation (24%) and bid management (22%). Residential contractors are earlier on the curve but expect the same shift — 74% see AI as key to efficiency.

Dentistry has quietly passed the economy-wide average: 43.3% of dentists now use AI for at least one task, and another 26.4% plan to (ADA Health Policy Institute, mid-2026). The split is telling — imaging and diagnostics lead at 22.8%, followed by insurance verification at 13.6% — while treatment recommendations stay under 5%. Dentists are automating the admin and keeping the clinical judgment.
Legal flipped from laggard to leader in two years: 71% of solo practitioners and 75% of small firms now use AI, and adopters are seeing revenue gains — 32% of solos report increased revenue from it (Clio 2026 Legal Trends Report). The governance gap is the story to watch: 43% of firms still have no formal AI policy (8am 2026 Legal Industry Report).
The trades are honest about where they are: 12% of contractors have AI embedded in operations and another 34% are actively experimenting — call it 46% in motion (ServiceTitan 2026 State of AI in the Trades, 1,032 contractors across plumbing, HVAC, electrical and more). Two-thirds expect AI to meaningfully transform their business within three years, and 62% of current users already report measurable gains, many saving 3+ hours a week. The barriers are training (44%) and integration complexity (44%) — not skepticism.
Real estate posts the highest professional adoption of any industry we track: 82% of agents use AI in their business and 68% use it daily or several times a week (RPR/NAR member survey, February 2026). A third save four or more hours a week. Listing descriptions, email drafting, and content workflows lead; the open concerns are output accuracy (63%) and Fair Housing compliance (28%) — which is why the winning automations are the ones with a human review step built in.

Marketing is where AI adoption stopped being a trend and became the default: 87% of U.S. small businesses use AI in their marketing as of April 2026, up from 26% in 2023 (Constant Contact, 5,000+ business owners surveyed). Copy and content writing leads at 42%, data analysis at 38% — and 40% of small businesses are using AI to absorb marketing workload instead of expanding ad budgets.

Measured as any regular AI use, marketing leads: 87% of U.S. small businesses now use AI in their marketing (Constant Contact, April 2026), and 82% of real estate agents use AI in their business (RPR/NAR, February 2026). Measured strictly as AI embedded in core operations, adoption is far lower everywhere — 12% in the trades (ServiceTitan) and 17-20% economy-wide (Census BTOS).
Because they measure different things. The Census BTOS asks whether a business used AI to produce goods or services in the last two weeks (17-20% say yes in 2026). Industry surveys typically ask whether anyone at the business uses AI tools for any task, which yields 68-87%. Both are true; the gap between them is the difference between experimenting with AI and running on it.
Across the 131 workflows in our AI Opportunity Atlas, the largest estimated annual savings for service businesses come from 24/7 AI call answering (about $23,000/year in recovered revenue), AI scheduling and dispatch optimization (about $19,500/year), AI inventory management (about $15,600/year), and AI blog content generation (about $15,600/year).
Fast where the ROI is proven. Commercial contractors reporting measurable business impact from AI jumped from 17% in 2025 to 38% in 2026 (ServiceTitan). Small business marketing AI use grew from 26% in 2023 to 87% in 2026 (Constant Contact). The Census BTOS expects overall adoption to keep climbing: 20-23% of businesses expected to use AI within six months as of May 2026.
